Symbolic representations require an interpretative effort by the user. The issue is the extent to which the interpretative effort permit us to reach our goal of peripheral, low-attention perception. “Complex representations were not only hard to learn but actually rejected by the users even before they had taken the time to familiarise themselves with it” (People Presence or Room Activity Supporting Peripheral Awareness over Distance).

Also the user should be able to recognise small differences in the energy the home is using for example the differences between turning a 40W light bulb on and off.
